What do Lindsay Lohan, Bugsy Siegel and Charles Manson have in common? Sunset Boulevard. Find out if they have any other similarities on our true crime deep dive of the Strip.

The Sunset Strip is one of the most famous streets in Los Angeles – and that’s saying something, bearing in mind that Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame are just a few miles to the east. First gaining prominence in the 1920’s, when speakeasies and gambling joints began to appear along its length, the Sunset Strip’s location in the badlands between the cities of Los Angeles (and Hollywood) and Beverly Hills made it perfect for the racy nightclubs that flourished there in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s.

As the 1960’s dawned it reinvented itself as a rock club scene and epicenter of the new anti-Vietnam war, hippie, counter-culture and then, in the 1970’s, it gained new prominence for its stand-up comedy-clubs that launched the careers of a huge number of famous comedians. Today, as you’ll see on this tour, many of the Strip’s most legendary venues are still operating, so it’s still a great neighborhood for Angelenos and visitors wanting a fun night out.

True crime history and figures that we cover on the Sunset Strip: True Crime & Ghost Tour include:

  • The Zankou Chicken murders
  • Pornstar John Holmes and the Wonderland Gang
  • Bugsy Siegel, Mickey Cohen and the West Coast mafia
  • The murders of Charles Manson and his gang
  • River Phoenix’s tragic death at the The Viper Room
  • The Comedy Store’s surprising mob history

The tour starts on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Heights, before heading west to see the location of one of the first nightclubs to open on the Strip, the Trocadero. We’ll pass by Carney’s, before hitting the Sunset Tower Hotel, which is a beautiful Art Deco gem. After that we pass icons like the Comedy Store and the Whiskey a Go Go, before the Sunset Strip: True Crime & Ghost Tour finishes at the legendary Viper Room.

Join guide Chris Westbrook, an acknowledged Los Angeles expert, for this trip down the Strip. Tour runs every Friday night.
