Inside LA - The Los Angeles Lowdown
10 Best Things To Do In LA, June 2022
As we continue a slow return to normality (whatever that is :-), more and more events are returning, after being on hiatus for the last year or two. In the meantime new diversions and experiences are appearing, meaning there’s a good range of different events happening in Los Angeles this month. So what are the best things to do in LA in June?
1. LAST REMAINING SEATS (JUNE 4-18)
This has been one of the highlights of summer in Los Angeles since the 1980’s. It’s when the Los Angeles Conservancy opens up the historic movie palaces and theatres on Broadway to show beloved, classic movies of different genres. In recent years the Conservancy have spread the love by including movie theatres outside of the Broadway Historic Theatre District, such as the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, but this year the program is concentrated on Broadway. Charlie Chaplin classic The Immigrant screens June 12 at the Orpheum, at 1 pm.
2. JUNE FIRST FRIDAYS AT THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM (JUNE 3)
What are First Fridays? As you might expect it’s an event on the first of Friday the month and it usually involves music and food trucks. At the Natural History Museum they’re all about the dino’s and DJ’s. The museum is open late and KCRW provide the sounds, so you can enjoy the guided tours and talks by researchers and scientists. Sounds like fun, right?
3. BIKE THE BEACH (ALL MONTH)
Let’s face it, going to the beach is one of the best things you can ever do, I always come back both reinvigorated and relaxed. Los Angeles having its own beaches is something that you have to take advantage of and June is a great month to do that.
Join us on our Santa Monica & Venice Bike tour and you’ll have the lightest of workouts as you cycle the beach neighborhoods, learn some fascinating history, see some cool stuff AND get coffee – or donuts – on possibly LA’s bougiest boulevard, Abbot Kinney. Tour is usually lead by local expert Silvie and runs every day at 10 am. Book here!
4. LA! PRIDE (JUNE 11-12)
Amazingly LA Pride began all the way back in 1970, over 50 years ago, but it does look amazing for its age though. Nowadays it seems more important than ever to support people who are in minorities, or on the margins, especially the LGBTQ+ community, but you don’t need high-minded reasons to want to experience LA! PRIDE – you can just want to have fun. Because it is after all one hell of a party.
5. FLESH AND BONES: THE ART OF ANATOMY (TO JULY 10)
For centuries, the structure of the human body was a fundamental concern for both medicine and art. Anatomy was a basic component of artistic education, and artists were a recognized part of the market for anatomical illustration. At the intersection of art and science, this exhibition looks at the shared vocabulary of anatomical images and at the different methods used to reveal the body through a wide range of media, from woodcut to neon.
Especially today, when the study of medicine has been shown to be so vital, this exhibition at the Getty is so fascinating and worth seeing.
6. EAT|SEE|HEAR (JUNE 18-JULY 2)
Definitely one of the best things to do in LA in June. These guys are one of the biggest of the outdoor movie screening organisers in Los Angeles these guys are all about movies, music and food trucks. It turns out that putting them all together creates a really fun night. Who’s a thought? This month they’re screening 42, The Birdcage and Jaws.
7. JAZZ AT LACMA (JUNE 3-24)
You never need an excuse to go to LACMA, but they’ve gone ahead and given you a good one anyway here. One of the nicest things about these concerts is that they include some of the best LA Jazz musicians, celebrating the important role Los Angeles continues to play in Jazz development.
8. LA ZOO SUSTAINABLE WINE + DINNER SERIES (JUNE 16)
Great food and good wine isn’t necessarily what you would expect from a visit to the zoo, but you’ll get that and more here. The evening offers “farm-to-table dinners, local wineries, and an exciting take on conservation and sustainability”. The evening begins with a talk on important conservation issues, in cool parts of the zoo, which are followed by “animal encounters” and a gourmet five-course meal with wine. Intrigued?
9. VISIT THE BROAD (ALL MONTH)
Since opening in 2015 a visit to the Broad has become an important rite of passage for any Angeleno even slightly interested in modern art, but have you been lately? Only about a third of the Broad’s art is on display at any one time and pieces regularly rotate between the second floor (where the art is stored) and the third floor (where it’s displayed and experienced). Both of Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Rooms are back up and running, so this is a great time to make that DTLA trip.
10. TAKE A TRIP DOWN THE STRIP (JUNE 25)
We’re organizing a special Sunset Strip Tour at 5pm on June 25. We’re starting at the Chateau Marmont, before stopping at Carney’s for one of their famous hotdogs and then ducking into the beautiful Sunset Tower Hotel for a cocktail (in Bugsy Siegel’s old apartment). From there we continue down the legendary section of Sunset Boulevard, passing the Viper Room, Roxy, Comedy Store and Whisky a Go Go, before ending at the Rainbow Room. On the way you’ll learn fascinating – and entertaining – history about the gangsters, musicians, comedians and stars who’ve frequented the venues. Book here before we sell out!
