10 Best Things To Do In LA, December 2021
There are usually a ton of things happening here – but what are the best things to do in LA in December 2021, as the city slowly comes back to life after Covid? Well, we don’t have as many to choose from as usual, but there are some really fun, interesting events over the Christmas period. Check below to find out which ones you’re interested in, for sure there’s going to be more than one.
Just remember to be safe in everything you do, be respectful – and have fun! We all need some of that in our lives.
1. THE NUTCRACKER (DECEMBER 4-26).
What could be more Christmassy than going to see this Yuletide staple by the Los Angeles Ballet? What’s more, there are several performances at the Dolby Theatre. That’s right – where the annual Academy Awards (aka the Oscars) are held. It’s actually a great venue for ballet too, it turns out.
2. THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER (ALL MONTH).
What can we say about him that hasn’t already been said. Many times. But surely the world of Harry Potter is perfectly attuned to Christmas. Universal are being tight-lipped about what new twists they’re adding this year, but either way this attraction is sure to be fun.
3. THE GROUNDLINGS SNOW GLOBE SHOW (DATES THROUGH DECEMBER).
The Groundlings is a breeding ground for comic talent that often ends up becoming famous – their alumni include Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte, to name just two. The sketch comedy shows are always very funny – and reasonably priced. You may even see some well-known faces in the audience!
4. HAMILTON, AT THE HOLLYWOOD PANTAGES (ALL MONTH).
The musical phenomenon is BACK, with performances at the Pantages through February 2022. But don’t wait until the last minute (when it will likely be sold out every night), go see it now! The Pantages is a beautiful, historic theater, right in the heart of Hollywood and is well worth a visit in its own right.
5. HAVE FUN AND LEARN ABOUT LOS ANGELES (ALL MONTH).
Los Angeles truly is an amazing city, built on the ambition and industry of the people that live and have lived here. It’s seen as not having much history, because it’s so young, but our fine city was founded in 1781, making it older than most people realize, and it obviously does have a fascinating history. History that’s changed the world. Join us on a tour this month and see a different side of LA.
6. THIEVERY CORPORATION, AT THE WILTERN THEATRE (DECEMBER 17).
The American electronic music duo may not seem like a perfect match for Christmas, but… who cares? If you’re looking for a fun way to spend a Friday night in December you couldn’t do much worse than heading down to the historic Art Deco Wiltern Theatre to see these guys play some of their greatest hits, as wells as tracks from their latest album, Symphonik.
7. CYCLAVIA: SOUTH LA (DECEMBER 5).
CicLAvia is without doubt one of the best things to happen to Los Angeles in the last decade. When whole neighborhoods, which had been lost to pedestrians and cyclists and taken over by motor vehicles, are periodically reclaimed by banning said vehicles, it’s amazing what can happen. People walking, cycling and having fun in a much cleaner environment. Suddenly Los Angeles feels like a very different place and we can truly realize that actually LA wasn’t designed around the car, in spite of what many people think.
8. SANTA MONICA PUB CRAWL (DECEMBER 18).
Did someone say pub crawl? Then sign me up! Part of the joy of Christmas is the sense that it’s allowed – and even encouraged – to have just a little too much to drink… only to get into the spirit of the season of course. And when you combine that with a pub crawl, well, you’re getting some exercise too. Santa Monica must be the perfect place to have a pub crawl (the other is downtown), since there are so many great bars within walking distance of each other. Have fun and stay safe!
9. LA COUNTY HOLIDAY CELEBRATION (DECEMBER 24).
This is a really fantastic FREE annual event held at the Music Center with all kinds of performers, from LA native Adam Walden (you must read his heartwarming story here), to the Celtic Irish Dance Academy, to the Los Angeles Chamber Choir, to Mostly Kosher. It’s a cornucopia of Christmas celebrations and promises to be a lot of fun.
10. CELEBRATE MAKING IT THROUGH 2021 (DECEMBER 25-31).
The last year (or two) has been a really tough one, so why not take some time to inwardly take stock of your body and soul and celebrate making it through to the other side of it in one piece? In, and of, itself that’s quite an achievement. At the same time everyone, if they’re honest, can improve on some aspects of their personality and character. Does it sound too Californian to meditate for a few moments and make a pledge to be a slightly better person in 2022? At the same time, don’t feel bad about eating way too much and having a few celebratory drinks over the holidays – you’ve earned it!
